Rev. Margaret Schultz-Akerson

Prior to coming to Faith, Margaret (Peg) Schultz-Akerson was pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church, Pasadena, which celebrated its 90th Anniversary in 2002.  Before serving Messiah, Pr Peg served congregations in Modesto, Santa Monica, and Newbury Park, California and as Director of Chaplaincy at Santa Monica Hospital.  

A native Californian, Pr Peg was born in Long Beach and was baptized at Angelica Lutheran Church in Los Angeles by the late Bishop Cal W. Segerhammer.  Her Bachelor's Degree is from California Lutheran University (1974) where she also received a Teaching Credential and a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education (1976).  

Pr Peg received her Master of Divinity Degree in 1980 from PLTS and her Doctor of Ministry Degree from the Claremont School of Theology in 2002.  Her  doctoral thesis is entitled "Reading the Word with the Heart: Luther's Large Catechism and the Practice of Faith."  For her Doctor Ministry work she was honored by the faculty of Claremont with the President's Award for Academic Excellence.

Sermons

Pr Peg also completed training as a certified Spiritual Director through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and has served in several capacities as Spiritual Director, including as adjunct staff at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino and at Holden Village. She is also a trained labyrinth facilitator through Veriditas, Grace Cathedral, San Francisco and currently coordinates the Labyrinth Ministry of the Southwest California Synod.  Pr Peg recently completed two terms on the Synod Council of the Southwest California Synod and was a voting member of the recent Churchwide Assembly in Milwaukee in 2003.  Pr Peg was honored to be the preacher at the Churchwide Assembly on August 15th, Mary, Mother of our Lord, for which her text was the Magnificat.  Her sermon can be heard through the ELCA website.  

While serving in Santa Monica, Pr Peg served on the Westside Interfaith Conference as Vice President for Interfaith Affairs. Her congregation, St. Paul's, shared its facilities with Sha'Are Am, the Santa Monica Synagogue and Pr Peg and her husband Pr Reg both worked closely with the synagogue's Rabbi, Jeffrey Marx. Pr Peg's last congregation, Messiah, Pasadena, also known as Iglesia Luterana Mesias, was highly invested in its outreach to the Latino members of its community through the partnership of the Division for Outreach and the Pasadena Area Lutheran Parish.  

Pr Peg's publications include three articles in The Lutheran, "Pondering Mary,"  "Homecoming for the Soul," and "Trinity" as well as "What Do We Mean by Healing" in Lutheran Partners.  Additionally, an article on retreat work, "Hovering between the World and Life Eternal" was published in Good Courage, a publication of Holden Village, and most recently "From Tourism to Pilgrimage," in What's News, a publication of the Women of the ELCA of the Southwest California Synod.

Pr Peg is married to Pr Reg Schultz-Akerson. They celebrated their 30th Wedding Anniversary this summer, and were both honored to receive the President's Award from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in 2003.  The Schultz-Akersons have two sons: Marty, a Cal graduate, and Micah, a graduate of Cal Lutheran.



 
Pastor Reg

Rev. Reg Schultz-Akerson

Pr Reg came to Faith from California Lutheran University, where he served for 7 1/2 years as Assistant to the President for Church Relations. His major responsibility was to sustain and extend the University's multiple relationships with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, especially the 775 congregations of Region II. 

Prior to his ministry at Cal Lutheran, Pr Reg worked as a team for 16 years with Pr Peg at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Modesto; St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Santa Monica; and King of Glory Lutheran Church, Newbury Park. 

Reg's undergraduate work was done at California Lutheran University, where he majored in both English and psychology. Pr Peg and he married just after graduation in 1974. In 1980, Reg received his Master of Divinity from PLTS.  One of Reg's keen interests is Christian spirituality, and in 1996, he completed the two year Academy for Spiritual Formation program offered by The Upper Room. 

The Schultz-Akersons have two sons: Marty, a Cal graduate, and Micah, a graduate of Cal Lutheran.  Reg enjoys hiking, running, backpacking, hiking, a good book, a good cup of coffee, and jazz.
