Taize Service

ALL SAINT'S TAIZE
Wednesday, November 4, 2009, 7:00 p.m.
Gentle and lovely sung prayer of the heart giving thanks for those who have gone before us into God's eternal embrace.  Uplifting of the soul!
Join us and invite a friend! Nursery Care provided.

The T aizé   (tay-ZAY´ ) prayer form is both personal and ecumenical, a format that crosses cultural and denominational lines.

The prayer form dates from 1940 when Roger Louis Schutz-Marsauche, a 25 year-old Lutheran later known as Brother Roger, came to the small village of Taizé in the Burgundy region of France, dreaming of starting an ecumenical community for contemplation and reconciliation of Christians of all faiths.

In the Taizé service, there is some scripture reading, much simple singing of chants, and time for meditation.  Candles are used to help us focus our thoughts.

Faith Lutheran periodically conductrs Taise` services.

JESUS CENTER BREAKFAST 2009 & 2010

Saturday Morning Breakfast Schedule
through April 2010

Greetings!  It’s that time again…as always, thank you for your continued service.  I have called the volunteer coordinator at the Jesus Center who says it is fine to be at the Jesus Center at 7:00 am on the morning you are scheduled.

I know these schedules are sent in multi-month blocks, so please mark your calendars because we don’t always have an opportunity to get out reminder calls. You have been an exemplary team in always showing up to serve, but I have to say it again anyway… If you cannot serve on the day you are scheduled, please call someone else on the schedule to arrange a switch.  If you would like to be removed from the schedule please contact Marge Troester.

Thank you for your continuing commitment to prepare and serve dinner at the Torres Community Shelter.  The shelter is immediately south of Costco across from the back parking lot at 101 Silver Dollar Way.
Phone number is 891-9048.

The schedule for 2010 is attached.  The first name  in each group is the Team Leader.  These are people who have experience serving dinner at the Torres Shelter, and will coordinate the team to prepare and serve dinners.

A Special note to Team Members:

  • Your team leader should be calling you to coordinate the dinner the week prior to your scheduled date.  If you don’t hear from them, please give them a call.
  • If you cannot serve on the day assigned, please notify your team leader.

A Special Note to Team Leaders:

    • Please contact your team members the week prior to serving to coordinate.
    • Some team members may be available to help shop or prepare the meal, others to serve.  More than 4 people serving at the Torres Shelter gets crowded.
    • If you can’t serve on the scheduled date, please only switch with other team leaders.
    • If someone on your team contacts Ron Heath, a member of Faith Lutheran Church, he may be able to provide bread, free of cost, for your meal. This needs to be arranged at least one week in advance of the day it is needed.
    • Please call the shelter in advance (891-9048) to find out how many guests they anticipate.  When your team is shopping please keep the expense limited to $2/guest.  You should make enough for staff as well (there are usually about 5 of them).  So the formula for calculating expenses is: # of guests + 5 staff x $2= total to spend.  Keep receipts for the food you buy, and turn them in at the church office for reimbursement.    If any of your team members are shopping, please advise them to do the same.
    • If you cannot serve on the day assigned, please arrange to switch with someone. If you have any other questions, please contact Craig Erickson or Bill Chipman.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday; February I?". The word "Lent" comes from an old English
word for "spring." Lent is a spring time for the soul. We gather on Sundays and Midweek to be
renewed in our baptismal identity as beautifully sung in this new hymn:

O Spirit, wake in us the wonder of your power;
From fruitless fear unfurl our lives like spring-time bud and flower.
Bring us, 0 Christ, to share the fullness of your joy;
Baptize us in the risen life that death cannot destroy. ELW 328

This Lent we will gather for Sunday worship to live the Year of Luke and its rich stories that gather us under God's gracious wings.

On Wednesday evenings our theme will reflect several of the amazing Biblical stories appointed for the Easter Vigil:

"A Big Fish (Jonah), A Home- made Ark (Noah),
A Parting Sea (Moses),
Dancing Bones (Ezekiel) &
Creation Set Free (Genesis 1).

Throughout the Sundays of Lent the background and theology of these stories will be'
skillfully opened up at FACE: Faith Adult Christian Education at 9:45 a.m. (see pg _. of this
Faith Talks.) Invite a friend as we dive into the waters of grace and allow God to "unfurl our
lives lik

Joseph Project

As part of Faith Lutheran's standing budget, we continue to respond to individuals and families in need of food to supplement their monthly budget.

We thank members of the congregation who so generously donate food to meet these needs.

While we try to link people up with community resources to meet their needs, it is nice to have a discretionary fund that can respond to emergent needs that rise during the course of the year.

Rwanda

We are building a loving, supportive, and empowering relationship with our Rwandan sisters and brothers.

Pastor Elidard supports two parishes in and around Kagitumba, and we, in turn, support Pastor Elidard and these parishes with funding on a quarterly basis.

Our contribution to education in Rwanda comes in the way of providing the tuition for seven students in Kagitumba, and seminary expenses for Pastor Elidard's son.

We thank the members of the congregation who have individually committed to the education of the seven students.

But perhaps most exciting was Pastor Elidard's visit to Faith Lutheran Church in October 2009.

We were blessed by is presence and have faith that the connection he made with individuals and groups in the church will enrich our relatioon as we explore how to deppen and grow this mutual ministry.

Rally Day Report - PICNIC IN THE PARK 2009

What better way to complete Faith's Rally Day festivities than with a picnic in beautiful Bidwell Park!

Approximately 140 picnickers gathered together at One-Mile and played all kinds of games,
enjoyed old-fashioned melodies, ate professionally prepared burgers, hotdogs and beans, toured the park in a pedicab,
and, mostly, enjoyed the fellowship of one another.

The Evangelism Team is pleased to offer this event each year, and
we are always extremely grateful to those Faith members who say, "Yes" when asked to assist.

This year we extend gigantic "Thank You's" to: Mark Chrisman, Tom Melvin and Pat Snyder
for grilling all of those burgers and dogs;

Charles Lynn for cooking up those yummy beans;

Kathy Harris, Dorothy Nelson, Anne Tsong, Kay Tucker, Barbara Torgerson, and Judy Struck for serving up lunch;

Jeanne O'Connell and Leanne Chrisman for introducing the get-acquainted games;

Art Davis and Dan Valdez for bringing some old-time tunes back to life;

Kathryn and Kent McKenzie for captivating us with fun, old-fashioned relay games;

Greg deGouveia for transporting picnic-goers on splendid pedicab rides and

Jolene Francis for being our masterful MC.

Of course, we especially thank our Evangelism Team spouses who supported us
from the beginning stages of this event until the very last box of supplies was packed away.

Next year, Rally Day occurs on Sunday, September 12, 2010, and
the picnic will again be held at One-Mile in Bidwell Park.

You won't want to miss it!

Janine Rush and the Evangelism Team

“Here we go a-caroling” around the neighborhood!
 December 13, 2009 at 6 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church

Everyone is invited and encouraged to dress up in their Santa hats or festive woolens and come out for an evening of community outreach thru music.

 We will meet at the church at 6 p.m. on Sunday night, December 13, and from there go into our Faith neighborhood singing Carols and spreading cheer.

Don’t worry, we will have wonderful choir members in each group to help lead the singing and keep us in tune!

This is a great way to let our neighbors know who we are at Faith and a great way for us to reach out to them.

Light refreshments including hot chocolate and cider will be provided by the Evangelism team.

Please bring flashlights and wear warm clothes and sturdy shoes.

We plan to walk the neighborhood for about an hour or hour and a half at the most.

If you are interested in participating, please write down “caroling” on the back of your worship card or let the Church Office know.
